ND out of money for Chesterville waterfront
Posted Jul 29, 2010 By Jill HudsonEMC News - North Dundas service clubs need to step up to the plate to help raise money for the Chesterville Waterfront, according to North Dundas council.
There is not enough money in the coffer right now to finish the Chesterville Waterfront project, as it was originally proposed with benches and a gazebo.
It was announced at July 13 town council meeting that the township will hold open house events to see if community groups and banks would want to sponsor benches in the park, along the waterfront.
The original plan put forward for the waterfront was for a tiered system of platforms that would go down to the water.
"When we started this project they said it would take two years to get the environmental approval to go into the water," explained township planner Colin Pol, "But we had to have the money spent in less than two years, so we pulled back out of the water."
Environmental policies, with the federal department of fisheries, required the township to obtain a permit to build into the water because it would disturb the fish habitat.
The township was faced with a decision to not do anything and wait two years for their permit or go ahead with production but pull out of the water.
That meant a new design for the waterfront, which cost more for construction, Mr. Pol said.
"So now we have some items that need to be financed," he said
The new method cost more than they originally anticipated.
The grant North Dundas received was for $1.6 million but the concrete expenditure came to $1.3 million and the engineering fees came close to $300,000.
